TikTok's 'Airport Theory' Explained
The world of social media has seen its fair share of travel trends, but TikTok's latest phenomenon is taking the cake – literally. The "airport theory" challenge is all about getting to your gate in 15 minutes or less, a bold experiment that's reaching peak popularity during the busy spring break travel season. But what exactly is this trend, and is it worth trying out?
What Is The 'Airport Theory' Trend?
TikTok users are taking on the challenge of getting to their departure gate in record time – 15 minutes or less. Sounds simple enough, but the reality is far from it. At busy international airports with multiple gates and security checkpoints, this timeframe can be a recipe for disaster.
For example, Denver International Airport's B Concourse alone stretches over 1.45 miles, making it an daunting task to get from the entrance to your gate in such a short amount of time.
The Risks Involved
"There are a lot of great tips to come from social media, however, 'airport theory,' is one hack you can happily skip over," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at The Going Travel App. "This concept is born from most people's desire to spend as little time in the airport as possible before their flight departs. And look, we get it. Airports these days can be crowded and feel like they can cost you an arm and a leg each time you step inside one."
But trying to cut it close on a travel day can have severe consequences. "If you miss your flight for running late, there's another one that goes out within the next couple of hours and the airline rebooks you free of charge or for a small fee," Nastro notes. However, if you're flying a route with limited flights or schedules, your trip could be cut short – and at an extra cost.
How Early Should You Get To The Airport?
Airlines often recommend arriving two hours before the boarding time to account for check-in, baggage drop-off, security screening, and finding your gate. But what if you're flying on a less busy day – like Tuesday or Wednesday? Can you cut it a little closer?
"Even despite airport arrival times being suggested figures, they aim to give travelers ample time to get a bag checked (if needed), navigate through security and then find their gates," Nastro explains. "Some airports require a healthy 15-to-20-minute walk or tram ride just to get to the correct terminal area."
The Bottom Line
By trying to cut it close on a travel day, airport theory could end up costing you more time and money – and inconvenience other travelers as you try to rush through the airport. So, should you take on the challenge? Probably not.
"If you're looking to make a connecting flight on the other hand, you're complicating the matter even further and may face an outright cancellation of your entire itinerary when you are counted as a 'no-show,'" Nastro cautions. "This could be a very costly mistake as you then may be faced with paying for a new, same-day ticket altogether, which is likely not cheap."
So, stick to the recommended arrival times and let's hope the next time you travel, it will be a smooth and stress-free ride.
