A Number of Flights Cancelled Today as Dublin Airport Continues to Recover from Weekend Chaos
Dublin Airport is still reeling from the aftermath of a cyber attack and bomb scare that disrupted operations over the weekend. In response, many airlines have canceled flights, causing delays for passengers. However, in an update released today, the airport operator has assured that they are taking steps to resolve the issue.
A suspected cyber attack on Friday night targeted Collins Aerospace, a company that provides check-in and boarding software used by airports in London, Brussels, and Berlin. This resulted in delays for flights, with at least 13 flights canceled yesterday in Dublin Airport's Terminal 2.
According to Graeme McQueen, DAA head of communications, some airlines in Terminal 2 are having to resort to "manual workarounds" in issuing bag tags and boarding passes. This means that passengers may experience delays at check-in. However, the airport operator urges passengers to arrive on time and allow extra time for checking in if they have a bag.
In an unrelated incident, an estimated 12,000 people were evacuated from Dublin Airport's Terminal 2 for about 90 minutes after a suspicious device was found in the luggage of a passenger. The evacuation began at 11:40am and resulted in delays of up to two hours for check-in and bag drop.
The cyber attack also affected other airports, including Brussels Airport, which canceled half of its scheduled departures today due to persistent problems. Heathrow Airport reported that it was recovering from the check-in system outage, with most flights continuing to operate. Berlin Brandenburg Airport said that some issues persisted but a manual workaround was in place.
Despite the ongoing issues, Dublin Airport is working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. The airport operator has assured that there are no flight cancellations planned for today and that experts are being flown in to help fix the issue. Passengers are advised to allow extra time for checking in if they have a bag and to arrive on schedule.
It's worth noting that the disruption to air travel is ongoing, and passengers may experience delays or cancellations today. We recommend checking with your airline for any updates before heading to the airport.
