Russia Suspected Of Jamming GPS As EU Chief's Plane Landed In Bulgaria
September 1, 2025 - A shocking incident has unfolded at Plovdiv Airport in Bulgaria, where the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's plane landed without incident, but with a cryptic warning: Russia is suspected of jamming GPS signals.
The Bulgarian government revealed that as the aircraft approached the airport, its GPS navigation system lost signal. Fortunately, ground navigation aids independent from GPS were used to ensure a safe landing.
Bulgaria's Air Traffic Control (ATC) confirmed the incident, stating that there has been an "increase in cases of GPS signal disappearance" since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Intelligence agencies and analysts have warned of a rise in Russian sabotage operations targeting critical infrastructure in Europe.
These so-called hybrid attacks blamed on Russia include arson attacks, disruptions to undersea communications cables, jamming of GPS satellite navigation signals, and the hacking of computer infrastructure. While the Bulgarian statement did not directly accuse Russia, an EU official revealed that they have received information suggesting "blatant interference" by Moscow.
"We are, of course, aware of the threats and intimidations that are a regular component of Russia's hostile behavior," said Arianna Podesta, European Commission's deputy chief spokesperson. "The incident highlights the urgency of President von der Leyen's mission in frontline member states."
Von der Leyen, who has been vocal about her opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, is on a four-day tour of EU nations bordering Russia and Belarus. The visit aims to strengthen ties with these countries and bolster defense capabilities.
"This will only reinforce our unshakable commitment to ramp up defense capabilities and support for Ukraine," added Podesta. "The EU will continue to stand united against Russian aggression and promote peace and stability in the region."
A Growing Concern
The incident marks a concerning trend of increased interference from Russia, which has been escalating its sabotage operations since the start of the war.
"Russia's actions are aimed at disrupting our ability to coordinate and respond effectively to security threats," said Podesta. "We will not be intimidated by these tactics and will continue to work towards a more secure Europe."
A Strong Response
The EU has vowed to increase its defense capabilities and support for Ukraine, in response to Russia's aggressive actions.
"The incident underlines the need for collective action against Russian aggression," said Podesta. "We will continue to work closely with our allies and partners to promote peace, stability, and security in Europe."
A Safe Landing
Despite the ominous warning from Russia, President von der Leyen's plane landed safely at Plovdiv Airport.
"The safety of our citizens is our top priority," said Podesta. "We are grateful for the professionalism of Bulgarian authorities and air traffic control in ensuring a smooth landing."
A Tour of Solidarity
Von der Leyen's visit to Bulgaria marks an important step in strengthening ties with EU nations bordering Russia and Belarus.
"This tour is a testament to our commitment to building bridges and promoting dialogue between Europe and its neighbors," said Podesta. "We will continue to work towards a more peaceful and secure region."
