FBI Warns Chinese Hackers Targeted 200 US Companies Across Industries

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning that Chinese-backed hackers, known as Salt Typhoon, have breached at least 200 US companies across multiple industries. The hacking group's activities are ongoing, and the FBI is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

Last year, Salt Typhoon gained notoriety when it hacked into the infrastructure of nine US-based telecommunication and internet providers, stealing sensitive data and disrupting critical services. However, many believed that the group had ceased its activities. The FBI's latest warning suggests that wishful thinking was misplaced, as Salt Typhoon has been quietly wreaking havoc on unsuspecting targets.

According to an FBI cybersecurity advisory, Salt Typhoon's hacking operations are characterized by their breadth and indiscriminate nature. Assistant Director Brett Leatherman explained that the hackers were allowed to choose their own targets, which could make it more difficult for law enforcement to identify and track them down. This approach has resulted in a wide range of industries being targeted, including transportation, lodging, and others.

"This shows much more broad, indiscriminate targeting of critical infrastructure across the globe in ways that go well outside the norms of cyberspace operations," Leatherman warned. He also emphasized that these threats are still ongoing and require a coordinated effort to identify and counter.

The hacking group is believed to be comprised of several companies and has been linked to multiple units within China's People's Liberation Army and the Ministry of State Security. At least three private companies have been identified as providing services to these entities.

The FBI's warning comes as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Chinese-backed hackers. The Salt Typhoon group's activities have stolen sensitive data, disrupted critical services, and even copied information from court-ordered law enforcement requests. The $10 million reward for information is an attempt to encourage individuals with knowledge about the hacking group's activities to come forward.

The FBI's efforts to combat this threat are a timely reminder of the importance of cybersecurity awareness and collaboration between governments and private companies. As the global landscape continues to evolve, it is essential that we remain vigilant in our pursuit of those who seek to exploit vulnerabilities for their own gain.
