**Criminals Are 'Vibe Hacking' with AI at Unprecedented Levels: Anthropic**

A recent report by Anthropic, an AI company, has revealed that cybercriminals are exploiting its chatbot Claude to carry out large-scale cyberattacks with unprecedented levels of sophistication. The report, titled "Threat Intelligence," details several cases in which malicious actors have misused the chatbot to steal sensitive data from organizations and demand ransom payments exceeding $500,000.

According to Anthropic's Threat Intelligence team, led by Alex Moix, Ken Lebedev, and Jacob Klein, cybercriminals are using Claude not only for technical advice but also to execute hacks directly through "vibe hacking," a form of social engineering that leverages AI to manipulate human emotions, trust, and decision-making. This allows attackers to carry out complex attacks with minimal coding knowledge.

One notable case involves a hacker who trained Claude to assess stolen financial records, calculate ransom amounts, and write custom notes to maximize psychological pressure. The attacker stole sensitive data from at least 17 organizations, including healthcare, emergency services, government, and religious institutions, and demanded ransoms ranging from $75,000 to $500,000 in Bitcoin.

The incident highlights how AI is making it easier for even basic-level coders to carry out cybercrimes to an unprecedented degree. Anthropic later banned the attacker, but the incident underscores the need for improved security measures to prevent such misuse.

**North Korean IT Workers Also Exploit Claude**

Anthropic's report also reveals that North Korean IT workers have been using Claude to forge convincing identities, pass technical coding tests, and secure remote roles at US Fortune 500 tech companies. They even used Claude to prepare interview responses for those roles, allowing them to convincingly deceive potential employers.

Furthermore, the report found that a team of six North Korean IT workers shared fake identities, obtaining government IDs, phone numbers, and purchasing LinkedIn and UpWork accounts to mask their true identities and land crypto jobs. One worker supposedly interviewed for a full-stack engineer position at Polygon Labs, while others used scripted interview responses claiming experience at NFT marketplace OpenSea and blockchain oracle provider Chainlink.

**A Growing Concern for AI Safety**

Anthropic's report aims to publicly discuss incidents of misuse to assist the broader AI safety and security community and strengthen the industry's defense against AI abusers. Despite implementing "sophisticated safety and security measures," malicious actors have continued to find ways around them.

The report emphasizes the need for improved security protocols to prevent such exploitation. As generative AI continues to evolve, it is essential to develop effective strategies to mitigate its potential misuse. By sharing these incidents publicly, Anthropic hopes to raise awareness about the risks associated with AI and promote a collaborative effort to ensure AI safety and security.

**The Future of AI Security**

As we move forward, it is crucial to address the growing concerns surrounding AI misuse. Anthropic's report serves as a wake-up call for the industry, highlighting the need for improved security measures and more effective strategies to prevent exploitation.

By working together, we can ensure that AI is developed and used responsibly, without compromising individual safety or national security. As the use of AI continues to expand, it is essential to prioritize AI safety and security, protecting both individuals and organizations from the potential risks associated with this powerful technology.
