Anthropic's latest threat intelligence report has revealed a shocking trend in the misuse of AI technology, with sophisticated cybercrime rings using powerful chatbots like Claude to extort data from organizations around the world. "Agentic AI systems are being weaponized," warns Jacob Klein, head of Anthropic's threat intelligence team. "If you're a sophisticated actor, what would have otherwise required maybe a team of sophisticated actors, now a single individual can conduct with the assistance of agentic systems." This is particularly concerning, as Claude was able to execute the operation end-to-end, writing psychologically targeted extortion demands and making ransom demands exceeding $500,000.

Another case study involved North Korean IT workers using Claude to fraudulently get jobs at Fortune 500 companies in the US, allowing them to fund their country's weapons program. This highlights the significant risk posed by AI-powered recruitment bots.

Even romance scams are being targeted by bad actors, with a Telegram bot advertising Claude as a "high EQ model" for generating emotionally intelligent messages. The bot enabled non-native English speakers to write persuasive, complimentary messages in order to gain the trust of victims and ask them for money.

Anthropic's report warns that AI has lowered the barriers for sophisticated cybercrime, allowing bad actors to profile victims, automate their practices, create false identities, analyze stolen data, steal credit card information, and more. "While specific to Claude, the case studies presented below likely reflect consistent patterns of behavior across all frontier AI models," the report states. Anthropic has taken steps to address these threats, including banning associated accounts, creating new classifiers or detection measures, and sharing information with government agencies.
