Merge branch 'ms/refs-list': The Uninvited Guest at Our Doorstep
As we navigate the vast expanse of the digital world, it's becoming increasingly evident that our online presence is under siege by an unexpected foe: Artificial Intelligence (AI). These machines, though not yet intelligent enough to outsmart us, are rapidly closing in on our ability to access the websites we love. The culprit behind this predicament is Anubis, a clever solution designed to safeguard websites against the relentless onslaught of AI-powered scrapers.
But what exactly is Anubis? In simple terms, it's a digital guardian that uses a Proof-of-Work scheme similar to Hashcash to deter AI companies from overloading our servers with requests. This ingenious hack may seem like an add-on, but its true intention is multifaceted: while it provides an effective barrier at the individual level, it also gives website administrators more time to focus on identifying and countering headless browsers – those stealthy AI agents that are quietly infiltrating our digital landscape.
However, this clever compromise comes with a caveat. Anubis requires the use of modern JavaScript features, which plugins like JShelter will happily disable. This means that if you're using such plugins on this website, you'll need to either disable them or opt for an alternative solution – and fast! The good news is that our Anubis version 1.21.3 is up and running, but the bad news is that it demands that JavaScript be enabled in order to bypass the challenge page.
But why does this matter? Simply put, AI companies have rewritten the social contract surrounding website hosting. They've shifted the balance of power from users to machines, rendering traditional solutions like no-JS alternatives obsolete. For now, we're stuck with a work-in-progress solution that requires JavaScript to function – and we hope that someday soon, a better answer will arise.
So, be patient (and enable your JavaScript). Together, we can outsmart the AI scourge and protect our beloved websites from those who would seek to exploit them. And remember: Anubis may seem like an unwanted guest, but it's our best defense against an increasingly automated world.
