FBI Seeks Crypto Industry Help to Track, Block Laundering of Bybit Hack Funds

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a public service announcement (PSA) seeking the help of the crypto industry in tracking and blocking transactions related to the $1.5 billion stolen from Bybit by North Korean hackers.

According to the FBI, the theft was attributed to the North Korea-linked Lazarus group and labeled as TraderTraitor activity. The cyberattack on Bybit, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, occurred last week, resulting in the largest ever hack of a crypto exchange.

The incident involved the theft of ether and ETH staking tokens, which were converted to bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies across thousands of addresses on multiple blockchains. The FBI stated that it expects the stolen assets to be laundered further and eventually converted to fiat currency.

As part of its efforts to combat cryptocurrency-related crimes, the FBI published a list of Ethereum addresses that are holding or have held assets from the theft in the public service announcement. This move aims to alert the crypto community about the laundering activity and encourage industry participants to report any suspicious transactions to the authorities.

The FBI's involvement highlights the growing importance of international cooperation in combating cryptocurrency-related crimes. Bybit, a popular cryptocurrency exchange, has taken steps to freeze the stolen funds, declaring "war on Lazarus" in an effort to recover the stolen assets and prevent future attacks.

North Korea-Linked Lazarus Group Behind Bybit Hack

The FBI's announcement reiterated North Korea's involvement in the hack and attributed it to the Lazarus group, a known North Korean hacking collective. The Lazarus group has been linked to numerous high-profile cyberattacks, including the theft of sensitive data from organizations such as Sony Pictures.

Blockchain analytics firms had previously attributed the Bybit hack to the Lazarus group, highlighting the sophisticated nature of the attack and the extensive use of cryptocurrency laundering tactics.

Crypto Industry Encouraged to Report Suspicious Activity

The FBI's PSA serves as a reminder to the crypto industry to remain vigilant and report any suspicious transactions or activity related to the Bybit hack. The public service announcement encourages industry participants to monitor their systems for unusual activity and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in tracking down the laundered assets.

By working together, the crypto industry and law enforcement can effectively combat cryptocurrency-related crimes and protect users from potential threats.
