Forget Netflix, Volkswagen Locks Horsepower Behind Paid Subscription
In a move that's set to surprise many car owners, Volkswagen has introduced a new subscription service that allows drivers of its ID.3 hatchback to unlock the full potential of their vehicle - for a fee. While the base model produces 201bhp, enthusiasts can boost this figure to 228bhp by paying an additional monthly subscription.
The subscription, which currently costs £16.50 per month or £165 per year, is available as an optional upgrade on select models of the ID.3 Pro and Pro S. This fee is significantly higher than the cost of a 'Standard with Ads' Netflix subscription, which offers access to the streaming service's library for just under three times that amount.
But what exactly does this subscription get you? According to Volkswagen, it increases net power by 27bhp and allows drivers to achieve a maximum torque of 310Nm - nearly 50Nm more than the car is capable of with its base engine. However, the German manufacturer insists that this upgrade will not affect the car's range or performance in any way.
One potential loophole has raised some eyebrows among car enthusiasts: hacking the system to manually activate the extra power. Volkswagen has refused to comment on whether such actions would invalidate the warranty or lead to legal action, leaving many wondering about the implications of this subscription model.
"Offering more power to customers is nothing new," said a spokesperson for Volkswagen. "Historically, many petrol and diesel vehicles have been offered with engines of the same size, but with the possibility of choosing one with more potency. These traditionally are higher up in the product range, with more specification and a higher list price." However, this change marks a significant shift in how car manufacturers approach power output - and pricing.
It's not the only company to offer such a service: BMW received criticism in the past for charging customers extra to activate features like heated seats. Similarly, Polestar owners can also purchase a performance pack that unlocks additional capabilities.
"If customers wish to have an even sportier driving experience, they now have an option to do so," said the spokesperson. "Within the life of the vehicle, rather than committing from the outset with a higher initial purchase price." The car is presented on the configurator with 201bhp, but the subscription option is clearly outlined for customers who want to unlock its full potential.
For those considering purchasing an ID.3, Volkswagen offers a range of options via its Buy A Car service or by purchasing a pre-owned model at competitive prices from £9,000 with no subscriptions required.
