Steam is Dropping macOS 11 Support
Valve, the popular gaming platform, has announced that it will be stopping support for Steam on macOS 11 Big Sur later this year. This move comes as a surprise to many Mac users who rely on Steam for their gaming needs.
The reason behind this decision is the deprecation of Google Chrome on macOS Big Sur. As of now, Google Chrome no longer supports macOS Big Sur, and future updates will require security patches and certain features that are only available in newer versions of macOS, specifically macOS 12 and above. Apple had already stopped supporting macOS 11 Big Sur in 2023, and it no longer releases updates or provides technical support to users still using the old operating system from 2020.
Valve has stated that there is no alternative but to upgrade to a newer version of macOS if users want to continue running Steam. On October 15th, 2025, Steam will officially stop supporting macOS version 11 ("Big Sur"). After this date, the Steam Client will no longer run on this version of macOS. To remain supported, users will need to update to a more recent version of macOS.
However, not all Macs can be easily upgraded due to their hardware specifications. macOS 11 was only compatible with certain older models released in 2013 and 2014, as well as those with Nvidia graphics cards. Users who rely on these machines will have to either buy a new device or resort to hacking their way to macOS 12 Monterey using unofficial methods.
According to Steam's latest data, only 1.88% of all users are currently running macOS 11. This relatively small percentage suggests that many users may not be too concerned about the impending end of support for this version of macOS. However, it's essential for users who rely on their Macs for gaming and other purposes to take note of this change and plan accordingly.
More information on this update can be found in a support article on the official Steam website. Users are advised to read up on the details and prepare for the inevitable switch to newer macOS versions.
