German Phone Repair and Insurance Firm Goes Bankrupt After Paying €200,000 to Ransomware Hackers

Despite generating tens of millions of euros in revenue, one of Germany's leading phone repair and insurance firms has fallen victim to a devastating ransomware attack. Einhaus Group, which operated with 170 employees at its peak, was hit by the hacking group Royal back in 2023. The attack resulted in the company's systems being encrypted, including access to contracts, billing, and stored communication.

The hackers, who identified themselves as Royal, contacted Einhaus Group founder Wilhelm Einhaus with a chilling message: "We've hacked you. All further information can be found on the dark web." The hackers demanded €200,000 (around $230,000) in Bitcoin to regain access to the company's computers.

Despite the high stakes, Einhaus Group paid the ransom, but unfortunately, it did not lead to a successful resolution. According to reports by Wa.de and Golem.de, the hacking group published 11% of the company's data on a dark web portal, causing further damage to the business. The attack also led to a significant loss of productivity, as insurance settlements couldn't be processed for months, resulting in lost revenue.

Insiders revealed that the estimated damage to Einhaus Group was in the mid-seven-figure range, with claims processing being swapped from digital to manual due to the disruption caused by the hack. The company's employee base was also significantly reduced, from 170 to just eight, highlighting the devastating impact of the attack.

Further investigation into the hacking group led to the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of cryptocurrencies related to the hack. However, the money paid in ransom has not been returned to Einhaus Group, with the company citing this as a major setback in its restructuring efforts.

The Rise and Fall of Einhaus Group

Einhaus Group was founded by Wilhelm Einhaus, who had been self-employed for 53 years. The company reportedly generated €70 million in revenue at its peak but was forced to downsize significantly after the ransomware attack. In a surprising turn of events, Einhaus has revealed that he plans to start anew and does not intend to retire.

"The fact that we, as proven victims, have not received the extorted funds back, even though they have been confiscated, has derailed our restructuring efforts," Einhaus stated in a recent interview. This statement highlights the importance of cybersecurity for businesses and the devastating consequences of falling victim to a ransomware attack.

Other notable examples of companies that have fallen prey to ransomware attacks include a major US food retailer, which exposed 2.2 million people's data, and an 158-year-old company, which was put out of business after being hit by a cyberattack. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of investing in cybersecurity measures to protect against such threats.
