DOJ: Sinaloa Cartel Used Mexico City's Camera System to Track FBI Agents – Kill Informants
A shocking revelation has come to light, courtesy of the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Inspector General (OIG). It appears that the notorious Sinaloa Cartel leveraged Mexico City's camera system to track down and identify FBI agents in Mexico, as well as intimidate and eliminate potential informants.
The OIG audit, which aimed to assess the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) efforts to mitigate the effects of ubiquitous technical surveillance, uncovered disturbing details about the cartel's tactics. In one instance, the Sinaloa Cartel hired a hacker who provided "a menu of services" that included exploiting cell phone data. This hacker, allegedly used by the cartel, managed to access an Assistant Legal Attaché (ALAT)'s call information, learning who he called and received calls from, as well as his geolocation data.
The OIG report revealed that this hacker's activities not only compromised the ALAT's personal life but also put him at risk. Moreover, the cartel utilized Mexico City's police surveillance camera system to track down the ALAT as he moved through the city, ultimately working to identify the people he met with. This chilling example illustrates the extent to which the Sinaloa Cartel has gone to infiltrate and disrupt the FBI's operations in Mexico.
The consequences of these actions have been severe, resulting in the intimidation and even killing of "potential informants." These individuals had likely crossed paths with cartel members or possessed information that could compromise their lives.
This disturbing development comes on the heels of recent revelations by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, which publicly identified and sanctioned two Mexican banks and one brokerage firm for allegedly laundering millions for various drug cartels and facilitating money transfers to China for fentanyl precursors. While Mexico's government has attempted to discredit these accusations, reports from Mexican news outlets have shed light on the connections between some of these entities and high-profile politicians.
The implications of this latest revelation are far-reaching, highlighting the ongoing struggle between law enforcement agencies and organized crime groups. As the battle for intelligence and resources continues, it is crucial that governments prioritize their security measures to prevent such tactics from being employed in the future.
