Hackers Steal Adidas Customer Data in Cyber Attack
Adidas has announced that it has fallen victim to a cyber attack, resulting in the theft of customers' personal information. The sportswear giant confirmed on Tuesday that hackers had gained unauthorized access to the contact details of people who have dealt with its customer service desk.
The breach, which was first discovered by Adidas, has left thousands of customers potentially affected. However, the company reassured fans that the incident "has no operational impact" and that passwords, credit card information, and payments-related data are safe.
According to an Adidas spokesperson, the hackers stole mainly contact information related to consumers who had contacted the company's customer service help desk in the past. This information includes names, addresses, and other personal details.
This latest cyber attack marks another blow for the retail sector in recent weeks. Marks & Spencer, Co-op, and Harrods have all faced massive disruption following their own cyber attacks. In contrast to Adidas' situation, Marks & Spencer's hack was estimated to cost around £300 million after being targeted around the Easter weekend.
A statement on the Adidas website outlined the steps the company is taking in response to the breach. "Adidas recently became aware that an unauthorised external party obtained certain consumer data through a third-party customer service provider," it said. "We immediately took steps to contain the incident and launched a comprehensive investigation, collaborating with leading information security experts."
The affected data does not contain passwords, credit card information, or any other payment-related details. However, Adidas is in contact with potentially affected consumers as well as relevant data protection and law enforcement authorities.
"We remain fully committed to protecting the privacy and security of our consumers, and sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern caused by this incident," said a statement on the Adidas website. As the company continues its investigation and takes steps to secure its systems, fans will be watching with interest to see how this breach is resolved.
"Adidas is taking this incident seriously and is committed to ensuring the security of our customers' personal information," said the spokesperson. "We will continue to work closely with law enforcement authorities and leading information security experts to identify the source of the breach and prevent future incidents."
