Google Warns US Retailers of Increasing Threat from UK Hackers

Alphabet's Google has issued a stark warning to US retailers, citing a growing threat from hackers responsible for paralyzing operations at British companies. The hackers, affiliated with the loosely connected network "Scattered Spider", have already caused significant disruptions in the UK retail sector, and are now setting their sights on similar businesses in the United States.

"US retailers should take note," warned John Hultquist, an analyst at Google's cybersecurity arm. "These actors are aggressive, creative, and particularly effective at circumventing mature security programs." Hultquist cautioned that Scattered Spider-connected groups have a history of focusing on a single sector at a time, with retail likely to remain their target for the foreseeable future.

The Scattered Spider network has been linked to several high-profile hacks in recent years, including the disruption of M&S' online operations, which remains frozen since April 25. In 2023, hackers tied to the group made headlines by targeting casino operators MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment.

A Growing Threat Across the Atlantic

Hackers from the Scattered Spider ecosystem have been responsible for a series of disruptive break-ins on both sides of the Atlantic. The lack of cooperation from cybercrime victims, combined with the group's amorphous nature, has made it difficult for law enforcement to get a handle on their activities.

"There aren't geographic boundaries on these threats," emphasized Christian Beckner, a vice president with the National Retail Federation. "We've been closely tracking everything going on in the UK over the past few weeks, and we're already seeing signs of this threat making its way to our shores."

A Call to Action for US Retailers

With the Scattered Spider network showing no signs of slowing down, US retailers are urged to take immediate action to protect themselves. This includes implementing robust security measures, such as multi-factor authentication and regular software updates, to prevent unauthorized access to their systems.

"We need to be vigilant in this fight," warned Hultquist. "The threat landscape is constantly evolving, and we must stay one step ahead of the hackers to protect our businesses and our customers." By staying informed and taking proactive steps to secure their operations, US retailers can minimize the risk of being targeted by Scattered Spider-connected groups.
