Databricks + Neon: Revolutionizing Postgres for a New Era of Developers and AI
Today, we are thrilled to announce that Databricks has agreed to acquire Neon, a pioneering developer-first, serverless Postgres company. This acquisition marks an exciting milestone in our journey to build the most developer and AI agent friendly database platform.
Neon's co-founders, Nikita Shamgunov, Heikki Linnakangas, and Stas Kelvich, are highly respected figures in the database community. With their combined expertise, they have successfully re-architected Postgres with a revolutionary separation of storage and compute, built for modern developers and AI systems.
The Neon team's mission to disrupt the database industry was born out of a desire to create a new platform that would dramatically improve experiences for developers. Four years ago, they joined forces with a vision to revolutionize the way databases are designed and used. Their goal was to build a platform that would simplify database technologies and make them more accessible to developers.
Neon's innovative database architecture decouples storage scaling from compute scaling, enabling developers to create, manage, and scale their databases with ease. This breakthrough has enabled Neon to become the go-to choice for developers, who rave about the speed, simplicity, and flexibility of its platform.
A fascinating statistic from Neon's early days highlights the growing importance of AI in database creation: 30% of databases were initially created by AI agents, not humans. Fast forward a year, and this number skyrocketed to over 80%, with AI agents now creating four times more databases than humans. This trend is expected to continue as developers increasingly rely on AI-powered tools to build and manage their applications.
As we welcome the Neon team into our fold, we are committed to delivering serverless Postgres at production scale to developers in an AI-native world. Our shared DNA in building hardcore technical innovations at the infrastructure layer will enable us to create a database platform that is truly fit for the modern developer and AI agent.
We also share the same commitment to open source, having originally started the Apache Spark project at UC Berkeley, the birthplace of Postgres. Together with Neon, we aim to disrupt the $100B OLTP market dominated by products built decades ago, creating a more developer-friendly and AI-agent friendly database platform.
What does this mean for existing Neon customers and partners? We are fully committed to the future of the Neon platform, and our roadmap remains ambitious. Existing customers can expect continued support and innovation, now with the full backing and resources of Databricks. It's a great moment for existing Neon users, and an exciting one for developers just discovering Neon – go launch a new Postgres instance on Neon today!
We're equally excited about what this acquisition will mean for Databricks' enterprise customers. We plan to share much more at the upcoming Data + AI Summit in San Francisco, June 9–12. Check out Neon's blog to hear directly from them about why they're thrilled to join forces.
