Germany Takes Down eXch Cryptocurrency Exchange, Seizes Servers

The Federal police in Germany (BKA) has launched a major operation against the cryptocurrency exchange platform eXch, seizing its server infrastructure and shutting down the platform for alleged money laundering and cybercrime. The move is seen as a significant blow to the illicit activities of cybercriminals who used the platform to launder their ill-gotten gains.

According to reports, the BKA seized eight terabytes of data and cryptocurrency worth approximately $38,000,000, making it the third largest seizure of digital assets in BKA's history. The platform did not comply with 'know-your-customer' regulations, allowing money laundering by cybercrime and other illegal rings to bloom.

The authorities claim that since its inception, an estimated 1.9 billion US dollars worth of cryptocurrencies have been transferred through the service. Suspicion surrounds eXch's role in accepting Bitcoin of criminal origin, including part of the stolen 1.5 billion US dollars from the crypto exchange Bybit, which was hacked on February 21, 2025.

The notorious North Korean hacking group 'Lazarus' is believed to have been involved in the Bybit hack, and eXch was initially implicated in their money laundering efforts. However, the service's operators denied any involvement at the time, dismissing some suspicious fund flows as isolated cases.

Despite this, the pressure and scrutiny eventually led the platform's operators to announce that they would shut down all operations on May 1, 2025. However, the BKA has seized eXch infrastructure, even if it is no longer active, which could help in tracing stolen amounts and identifying cybercriminals who used the service.

The operators of the platform are now under suspicion of commercial money laundering and operating a criminal online trading platform. The German police say that they managed to secure numerous pieces of evidence despite the limited time available since eXch announced its shutdown.

The Significance of the Seizure

The seizure of eXch's servers and assets is significant not only because of the large amount of cryptocurrency involved but also because it highlights the ongoing struggle against cybercrime and money laundering. The BKA's efforts demonstrate their commitment to protecting Germany's financial system and preventing illicit activities.

The Role of eXch in Cybercrime

eXch's alleged involvement in accepting Bitcoin of criminal origin has serious implications for the global fight against cybercrime. The seizure of the platform's servers and assets sends a strong message that such platforms will not be tolerated, and that those who engage in illicit activities will face severe consequences.

The Future of Cryptocurrency Regulation

The eXch case raises important questions about the regulation of cryptocurrency exchanges and the need for stricter controls to prevent money laundering and cybercrime. As the use of cryptocurrencies continues to grow, it is essential that governments and regulatory bodies take proactive measures to ensure that these platforms are operating within the law.
